  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a mixing bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In a separate bowl, cream together butter and sugar using an electric mixer until light and fluffy.
  4. Beat in egg, milk, and vanilla extract until well combined.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing on low speed until just combined. Do not overmix.
  6. Pour the batter evenly into a greased 8x8 inch baking dish.
  7. In a saucepan, combine brown sugar, water, maple syrup, and butter.
  8. Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring constantly until the sugar is dissolved.
  9. Reduce the heat and simmer for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  10. Carefully pour the hot sauce evenly over the cake batter in the baking dish.
  11. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the cake is golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  12. Let cool slightly before serving. Spoon the cake into bowls and drizzle generously with the remaining maple syrup sauce from the baking dish. Serve warm.
