Nanaimo Bars
A classic Canadian dessert with a chocolate crumb base, custard filling, and chocolate ganache topping.
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup (for base) + 1 cup (for topping) Semi-sweet Chocolate Chips
- 1/2 cup Graham Cracker Crumbs
- 1/2 cup Shredded Coconut
- 1/4 cup Chopped Walnuts (or almonds)
- 1/2 cup, melted (for base) + 1/4 cup (for filling) Butter
- 2 cups Powdered Sugar
- 240 mL Sweetened Condensed Milk
- 3 tbsp Custard Powder
- 1/4 cup Evaporated Milk
Instructions
- For the base: In a bowl, combine graham cracker crumbs, shredded coconut, chopped walnuts (or almonds), melted butter, and 1/2 cup melted chocolate chips. Press firmly into an ungreased 8x8 inch pan.
- For the filling: In a bowl, cream together butter, powdered sugar, sweetened condensed milk, and custard powder until smooth. Spread evenly over the base.
- For the topping: Melt the remaining chocolate chips with evaporated milk, stirring until smooth. Spread evenly over the filling.
- Refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or until the topping is set. Cut into squares.
