Mexican Hot Cross Buns with Chocolate Chips
A Mexican twist on the classic Hot Cross Buns with Mexican spices, and chocolate chips.
Ingredients
- 4 cups All-Purpose Flour
- 1/2 cup Sugar
- 2 1/4 tsp Instant Yeast
- 1 tsp Salt
- 1 cup Milk
- 1/4 cup, melted Butter
- 2 large Eggs
- 1 tsp Cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp Nutmeg
- 1/4 tsp, crushed Anise Seed
- 1/2 cup Chocolate Chips
- 1 pack, icing Hot Cross Buns
- 1 egg yolk beaten with 1 tbsp milk Egg Wash
Instructions
- In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, instant yeast, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and crushed anise seed.
- In a separate bowl, combine milk, melted butter, and eggs.
- Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix until a dough forms. The dough should be soft but not sticky.
- Knead in the chocolate chips, ensuring they are evenly distributed throughout the dough.
- Cover the bowl and let the dough rise in a warm place for 1.5 hours, or until doubled in size. A good rise is crucial for a light texture.
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces and shape each into a smooth bun.
- Place the buns on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, leaving some space between each.
- Use a sharp knife or a dough scorer to cut a cross shape on top of each bun. This not only looks traditional but also helps with even baking.
- Brush the tops of the buns with egg wash for a golden, glossy finish.
- Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 20-25 minutes, or until the buns are golden brown. Check frequently to avoid over-browning.
- Let the buns cool slightly before frosting with the icing from sale item Hot Cross Buns.
