Italian Fried Dough Twists (Zeppole)
Classic Italian fried dough twists, dusted with powdered sugar and cinnamon for a sweet and delightful treat.
Ingredients
- 1 1/4 cups, plus more for dusting All-purpose flour
- 1 tbsp Granulated sugar
- 2 tsp Baking powder
- 2 tbsp, unsalted, melted Butter
- 1/2 cup, warmed Milk
- 1 large Egg
- 1/2 tsp Vanilla extract
- For frying Vegetable Oil
- For dusting Powdered sugar
- For dusting Ground cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp Lemon zest
Instructions
- In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, and lemon zest.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together melted butter, warmed milk, egg, and vanilla extract.
- Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Do not overmix; the dough should be slightly sticky.
- Lightly flour a work surface and turn out the dough. Gently knead a few times until it comes together.
- Heat vegetable oil in a deep pot or fryer to 350°F (175°C).
- Roll small portions of dough into ropes about 1/2 inch thick and 6 inches long. Twist each rope into a spiral or knot.
- Carefully drop the zeppole into the hot oil, frying a few at a time for 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and cooked through. Avoid overcrowding the pot.
- Remove zeppole from oil and drain on paper towels to remove excess oil.
- Dust generously with powdered sugar and cinnamon while still warm. Serve immediately for best flavor and texture.
