  2. Add sliced Italian sausage, bell peppers, and onions to the skillet.
  3. Cook until sausage is browned and vegetables are tender-crisp, about 8-10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  4. Add minced garlic and red pepper flakes (if using) and cook for another minute until fragrant, ensuring not to burn the garlic.
  5. Pour in canned diced tomatoes and sprinkle with Italian herbs and black pepper.
  6. Stir well to combine and bring to a simmer.
  7. Reduce heat to low, cover, and let simmer for 15 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld. Uncover during the last 5 minutes to reduce the sauce slightly.
  8. Garnish with fresh chopped basil before serving.
  9. Serve hot on its own, over cauliflower rice, or with a side of zucchini noodles for a complete low-carb meal. Ensure the sausage reaches a safe internal temperature of 160°F (71°C).
